Creating a Flash Animation

  1. Start up Flash

Start - Programs - Macromedia - Macromedia Flash MX
  2. Save the new file using ...

    File - Save As

You will need to create a folder such as H:\flash\

Save your file to H:\flash\01-Anim.fla or something similar.
  3. Use the Rectangle Tool to draw a small rectangle on the Stage

  4. Press Ctrl+A (Hold down the control key, press A and then release the control key).

    This selects the whole rectangle.
  5. Now convert your rectangle into a re-useable symbol.

To do this, press the F8 key. This window should pop up.

  6. Copy frame 1 and paste it into frame 20.

Be sure to use Copy Frame and not just Copy. Likewise be sure to use Paste Frame and not just Paste.

  7. Select frame 20 and move the rectangle to a new position on the stage.

  8. Create a Motion Tween.

  9. Test your animation by pressing Ctrl+Enter. (Hold down the control key, press the Enter key and then release the control key.) Here is the finished movie! You can download the .fla file to see what it looks like.

  10. Advanced Task - This one is tricky!

Right click to add a motion guide.

  11. Turn on onion skinning.

Here is a Close Up of the blobs in frame 1 and 20.

  12. Use the Pencil Tool to draw a path for the animation to follow.

Use Ctrl+Enter to preview your animation. Here is one we made earlier. You can download the .fla file.

More Tasks

Build up a more complex movie. Use more frames. For example put scene one on frames 1 to 20 and scene two on frames 21 to 40.

You can add more layers to make more than one animation happen at a time. Each animation has to go on its own layer.

You can make a background layer to provide non moving scenery.
