Had we walked right along the coast, this walk would have had little to offer apart from mile after mile of sea front. Whenever possible we headed inland an walked on quiet roads and on mountain paths. The terrain was varied and interesting. There were lots of wild flowers. We even found a few we had never seen before.

Transport and Route Summary

Fri 21st Mar 2008

London Stansted to Alacant.
Ian gave us a lift to Stansted. At Alacant, a different Ian took us to Altea. The flight was delayed by a paperwork error and our meeting-up arrangements were not ideal and took a long time to sort out. We still arrived in time to do a bit of food shopping for the Easter weekend.

Sat 22nd Mar 2008
28.1 km.

Poble Espanyol to Vila Joiosa.
Train. The route was on quiet roads, and included the Amadorio dam. The best part was from Aigües to the dam.

Sun 23rd Mar 2008

Easter Sunday. Beach Picnic.
We had a rest day and took Mini to the beach for a picnic lunch.

Mon 24th Mar 2008
24.2 km.

Vila Joiosa to Hiper Finistrat.
Train. We headed inland avoiding the coastal strip. The route included the Amadorio dam and lake. The main road on the north leg could be busy but, being a bank holiday, the traffic was minimal.

Tue 25th Mar 2008
23.9 km.

Finistrat to Altea.
Taxi. The first bus to Finistrat was too late in the day so we treated our self to a taxi. The walk was on mountain paths and dirt roads, then a river bed and finally on quiet lanes through orchards.

Wed 26th Mar 2008
17.7 km.

Altea to Calp.
Train (actually a replacement bus service during flood repairs). The Sierra Bernia ridge forces all the road and rail links into a narrow strip near the coast so this part of the walk was unpleasant. The start on quiet lanes and the end on a mountain track were very nice.

Thu 27th Mar 2008

Train.
We had a pleasant train ride to Crueta and back. This was mainly to see the scenery. Later we had a picnic lunch near Altea harbour.

Fri 28th Mar 2008
17.5 km.

Calp to Teulada.
Train plus a replacement bus service. The walk was on quiet lanes climbing slowly to 250 metres where the route followed a ridge with nice views. In Teulada the streets were being set up for the St Vicente festival.

Sat 29th Mar 2008
26.0 km.

Teulada to Xàbia.
Train, bus and a shepherd's old banger. The start and end of the walk were both nice. In the middle we got lost in a Bermuda Triangle of villa land streets. There were undocumented dead ends where the rich people had fenced themselves inside a Hollywood style gated community. The old banger took us past some dangerous bulls.
Sun 30th Mar 2008
12.8 km.
Xàbia to Dénia.
Bus and Train. Most of the route was on mountain paths or later on a beach side trail. We crossed the low ridge at the east end of Montgó. Very nice indeed.
